Krita in Use (Part 2 of 2)

This is a follow up to our first post on Krita

Brushes Galore

My test run of Krita focused on a still life to get a feel for the different brushes.  Most of my work uses the Charcoal brush and a heavy use of the blending brushes to get the shading just right.

One of my favorite features is the list of colors that are already in your image to the right of the color selector, this makes it easy to keep yourself confined to a given set of colors.

I accidentally turned on the Wrap mode that allows your brushes to wrap from one edit to another similar to the way the ship moves in Asteroids.

Turning any brush into an eraser is a handy trick but after a while I kept reaching for the undo button from the menus.

Animation

Without reading any documentation I jumped right into the animation section of Krita and through sheer trial and error I managed to whip up something quick. This will not win any awards, but you can see how you can get a quick animation up and running relatively quickly. I am certain I did not use the full extent of the software, but it was quite satisfying.

NOTE WELL: Krita can output the series of images needed for the animation, however to build something useable like an MPEG or a GIF you need to have FFmpeg installed on your computer.  The animation window has a small text box where you can tell Krita where FFmpeg is installed.

Each layer can be independently animated.

I slowed down the animation speed, the default rate is 24 frames a second, I used 9.

For your viewing pleasure, my silly fish.

Conclusion

Krita is an excellent piece of software and will soon become my new workhorse for Digital Painting and Animation.

Happy Hunting!
